Homework for Monday, March 24

The homework for today was given out in class.  Below is the sheet in case you lost it.

First, find the VOLUME of all of the rectangular prisms
Volume = Length * Width * Height

Second, Find the SURFACE AREA of the same prisms in #1 - #8 from this sheet. Write the surface areas on the back of the sheet.

Surface area = 2 (LW + LH + HW)

We will review another method for surface area tomorrow.  Show your work and calculations for each of your answers.

Homework for Thursday

The first part of the homework was given to you on Tuesday, that is due tomorrow.

Answer the following questions on volume for the second part of the homework on loose-leaf paper, due tomorrow.

1.)  What is the volume of a cooler that measures 30 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 15 inches tall?

2.)  Sugar cubes measure 1 cubic centimeter.  How many sugar cubes can fit in a box that measures 20 cm, by 8 cm, by 2 cm?

3.)  Jonathan brought a box that measured 20 cubic feet.  What are the possible dimensions (length, width, and height) of his box?  Come up with at least 3 combinations.

Length=
Width=
Height=
Volume = 20

4.) Mayra has a long box for a tube of poster paper.  The volume of the box is 7 cubic feet.  Using only whole numbers, what are the only possible dimensions for the length, width, and height?  (think about the volume of 13 for today)

Challenge
5.)  Mr. Sawicki wants to buy a case of Rubix Cubes. Each Rubix cube measures 27 cubic centimeters. The case of Rubix cubes is 9 centimeters long, 15 centimeters wide, and 6 centimeters high. How many Rubix cubes can fit in each case?

2.)  diameter = 15 cm

3.)  radius = 8 cm

4.)  radius = 10 cm

Solve the following word problems.

5.)  Aracely is practicing for her track meet. The track is in the shape of a circle and it measures 100meters across from one end to the other through the center.  If she runs 4 laps around, about how many meters will she run total?  Use 3.14 for pi.

6.)  Juan is making a giant pizza with a pretzel crust.  He rolls the pretzel and it measures 78.5 inches long.    If he is using a pizza pan to bake it, how wide of a pan will he need?  Use 3.14 for pi

Homework for Thursday and Special Activity

The homework for Thursday, March 13 was passed out in class today. You are to finish your sheets on the areas of triangles and polygons.

SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT!

For all of us math nerds, tomorrow is a special day.  We call it "Pi Day."  In honor of this great mathematical day, I am giving you a special assignment.  Spread the word to your fellow students!

For each 6th grade class, the student the memorizes the MOST digits for Pi will have the privilege to throw an actual pie in my face.  We will do this sometime tomorrow before the end of the day.

Here is a link to the numbers, or you can scroll below or look up videos on YouTube.  GOOD LUCK!

And for a nerdy joke, here is a classic from The Simpsons

Homework for Tuesday, March 11

Complete the following on loose-leaf paper to turn in.

1.)  How many feet are in a yard?  If you have a square that measures 1yd by 1yd, how many square feet would it be? (think of how many feet are in a yard) Draw this out to clarify.

2.)  Daisy and Esmeralda are going to mow two fields in McKinley park.  The rectangular field that Daisy mows is 80 yd by 80yd.  The rectangular field that Esmeralda mows is 90yd by 60 yd.  Who mowed more grass?  How much more did that person mow?  Show your work.

3.)  Mr. Basco needs to put tape around the gym floor for a basketball game as a border. First he puts on a new hardwood floor.  The floor is 300 sq. yards and the length is 10 yards.  How long is the width?   How much tape will he need for the outside border?  Show your work and make a drawing to help.

Challenge:
4.) The Chicago Bears need to resow the grass for the football field.  The football field measures 120 yards long and 53 yards wide.  The grass is sold for $2.50 per square foot (not yard).  How much will it cost the Chicago Bears to put new grass on the whole football field?
*hint, think of how many feet are in a yard, and how many square feet are in a square yard.

2.  Oscar is going to put up a fence in his neighbor's rectangular garden.  He doesn't know how much fencing he needs, but he does know that the yard is 30 sq. ft.  What are the possible dimension combinations (length and width) of the garden?  Draw this out.

3.)  Melissa measured the perimeter of her walls in her room.  She wants to put new tiles on her floor.  The perimeter she measured was 40 feet.  What are the possible areas of her floor? Draw these out.

Homework for Monday March 3

Here is your homework for today.
Answer the following questions based on our classwork today.

1.)  After how many visits would the Regular deal and the All-in-One deal cost the same?  Explain how you found this.

2.) If Carlo goes 20 times each month, how much would each of the plans cost in one year?  How much would he save in a year by doing the Regular plan instead of the All-in-one and the Pay-As-You-Go?

3.)  Describe what kind of customers would benefit from each of the plans.  What kind of person should pick the all-in-one plan?  What about the other two plans?
